Jakarta (24/05) — Israeli forces opened warning fire against European diplomats who were on an official visit in Jenin City, West Bank, Palestine, on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. The outrageous actions of the Zionist forces have sparked international outrage, including from Western countries.
The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) urged the world to put pressure on Israel. This was stated by Sukamta, a member of Commission I of the DPR RI, on Friday (May 23) in Jakarta,
“Israel increasingly shows its true character and nature, blind and indifferent to other people and nations. Even a delegation of approximately 30 diplomats from Europe was shot at by Israeli soldiers. The world must continue to put pressure on Israel in various ways to stop its brutality.”
The Chairman of the Agency for Foreign Affairs of the DPP PKS (Prosperous Justice Party) explained that diplomats are protected by international law, including the Vienna Convention of 1961 on Diplomatic Relations and the Vienna Convention of 1963 on Consular Protection. Israel has violated Article 29 of the 1961 Convention, which states:
_The person of a diplomatic agent shall be inviolable. He shall not be liable to any form of arrest or detention. The receiving State shall treat him with due respect and shall take all appropriate steps to prevent any attack on his person, freedom or dignity._
“Essentially, diplomats must be protected from all forms of violence and must be treated with respect,” he said.
The Israeli military argued that the diplomatic convoy had deviated from the approved route and entered a forbidden zone.
Sukamta emphasized in accordance with the Vienna Convention that diplomats have freedom of movement, as stated in Article 26:
_Subject to its laws and regulations concerning zones entry into which is prohibited or regulated for reasons of national security, the receiving State shall ensure to all members of the mission freedom of movement and travel in its territory._
“In essence, diplomats are guaranteed protection to move to necessary locations. Even the receiving State must ensure freedom of movement and travel within its territory to all members of the diplomatic mission,” he said.
Moreover, based on information from the UN website, Israel also signed the Vienna Convention on April 18, 1961. However, once again Israel demonstrates its arrogance by violating the laws that it has signed.
Many international laws have been violated by Israel, such as the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Rome Statute. Starting from the prohibition of attacking civilians, the prohibition of attacking hospitals, the prohibition of attacking journalists, the prohibition of blockading Gaza that results in starvation, etc. This indicates that Israel is above the law. International institutions and society seem powerless in confronting Israel to stop its brutal actions.
“Therefore, the world needs to take collective real action to save the Palestinian Nation in Gaza and the West Bank. There must be massive and extraordinary breakthroughs to stop Israel’s crimes,” emphasized Sukamta, who holds a Doctorate from Manchester, England.
