Jakarta (02/07) — Chairman of the PKS Fraction of the Indonesian Parliament, Jazuli Juwaini, strongly condemned the burning of the holy Qur’an in Sweden. This is not the first time that the burning of Muslim holy books has occurred in Sweden and several European countries. He said, this action really hurt the feelings of Muslims around the world who had just celebrated Idhul Adha.
“Burning the holy Qur’an is an act that is barbaric and cannot be tolerated in any name, especially in the name of freedom of expression and human rights. Sweden must take firm action so that this doesn’t happen again.,” said Jazuli.
This member of Commission I of the DPR said that it was very unfortunate that this had happened in developed country which should have behaved more maturely and in a civilized manner. Civilization cannot be built on hatred and intolerance. This hypocritical attitude does not reflect modern civilization at all.
“Indonesia as a Muslim-majority country is very disappointed with this provocative intolerance. An official protest has been filed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and various groups. This shows Indonesia’s love for peace and world civilization with dignity,” said Jazuli.
Therefore, this Member of the DPR for the Dapil Banten invites Western countries which so-called upheld human rights and tolerance to increase the awareness of their citizens about the importance of tolerance and against all forms of Islamophobia including phobia of any religion in the world.
“As citizens of the world, we need a world atmosphere that is safe, calm, free of conflict and conducive. So all citizens of the world community must be united in condemning things that can trigger horizontal conflict,” concluded Jazuli.

The burning of the Qur’an occurred when a group of people held a demonstration that took place in front of the central mosque in Stockholm, Sweden during the Eid al-Adha celebration (29/6/2023). One of the two protesters even tore up and burned the Qur’an as a form of opposition to Islam.
The Qur’an was torn up, used to wipe the man’s shoes and then burned. Someone else shouted through a megaphone.
